Terms of Service
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the VSub application programming interface and related documentation (collectively, the "API" or "Service"). By requesting an API key or making any request to the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
1. What the Service Provides
The Service returns two kinds of data and nothing else:
- Subtitle metadata — aggregated, publicly available subtitle records, each with a direct download link to a normalized subtitle file.
- Title metadata — descriptive facts about movies and television series, and crosswalks between identifier systems.
The Service indexes and aggregates publicly available subtitle metadata; we are not the source of the underlying material. The Service does not host video and does not provide, resolve, or proxy any video stream. No response from the Service contains a stream URL, playlist, manifest, or media resolver of any kind.
2. Eligibility and Accounts
You must be at least the age of majority in your jurisdiction and capable
of forming a binding contract. You are responsible for all activity under
your API key. Keep your key secret; transmit it only in the
Authorization: Bearer or X-API-Key header, never
in a URL or query string.
3. Acceptable Use
You agree not to:
- Use the Service to infringe, or to facilitate the infringement of, any copyright or other intellectual property right.
- Represent the Service, or build a product that represents the Service, as a source of infringing video content.
- Exceed the rate limits applicable to your key, or attempt to evade them with multiple keys or distributed requests.
- Scrape, resell, or redistribute the Service's responses in a manner that violates the terms of the underlying data sources.
- Reverse engineer, probe, or attempt to discover the internal infrastructure or data sources behind the Service.
4. Data Sources, Attribution, and Licensing
Title identifiers and basic factual metadata are sourced primarily from Wikidata, which is released under the Creative Commons CC0 public-domain dedication.
A richer metadata tier may be backed by The Movie Database (TMDB) and is available only to keys provisioned under a separate licensed agreement. Where TMDB-sourced data is returned, the following attribution applies and is included in the response: "This product uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB." The Service does not re-serve scraped IMDb output.
Subtitle files are aggregated from third-party subtitle sources. The Service caches and normalizes these files but does not claim ownership of them. Use of any subtitle file is subject to the rights of its respective owner.
5. Copyright Complaints
We respond to notices of alleged copyright infringement under the DMCA. See our DMCA Policy for the designated agent, the takedown procedure, and the counter-notification procedure. We maintain a policy of terminating repeat infringers in appropriate circumstances.
6. Rate Limits and Availability
Requests are rate limited per key. Each response includes
X-RateLimit-Limit, X-RateLimit-Remaining, and
X-RateLimit-Reset headers; exceeding the limit returns
429 with a Retry-After header. The Service is
provided on an "as available" basis and may change, suspend, or discontinue
any part of it at any time.
7. Disclaimers
THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE," WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED, OR STATUTORY, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ACCURACY, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. We do not warrant that the data returned is complete, accurate, or current.
8. Limitation of Liability
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, IN NO EVENT WILL VSUB BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF PROFITS OR DATA, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE.
9. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless VSub from any claim arising out of your use of the Service or your violation of these Terms, including your use of any subtitle or metadata obtained through the Service.
10. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. Continued use of the Service after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.
